Germany's Transport Minister, Andreas Scheuer, has called on the country's car industry to move more quickly in switching to less climate-damaging engines. Scheuer, who is a member of the Bavarian Christian Social Union, told dpa: "Nobody denies that the German automobile industry is technologically good and innovative. We have to bring these German innovations onto the road more quickly, and have to make them tangible and suitable for everyday use." He said it's not just about the mobility of the future, but also about the jobs of tomorrow.

"We have to make people curious and inspire them. We must dispel prejudices against alternative engine systems in terms of range and suitability for everyday use," said Scheuer. "When I look at some of the products of foreign car manufacturers, there is a lot of image and marketing behind them. Our strength is perfection. But perfection must not lead to wasted time in development."

The transport minister described 2020 as a "year of hope" for car engines in Germany that are less damaging to the climate. "Many new e-car models will be launched on the roads. But we must be open to new technologies."

Vehicles with alternative engines have still not made the breakthrough on the mass market in Germany, even though more electric vehicles were sold in 2019.
