MILAN, Oct 6 (Class Editori) — New sharp decline in ocean container freight rates, the 32nd consecutive one looking at the composite index compiled by Drewry that takes into account the world's top eight routes. In fact, the analytics firm's latest report shows an 8% drop in the cost of 40' box shipments, to an average value of 3,689 dollars, 64% lower than the amount found a year ago (10,377 dollars) as well as 1% lower than the average value over the past five years (3,723 dollars). A sign, the latter, that Drewry reads as a trend toward a return to normalcy, although the figure is still 160% higher than in September 2019.
Prominent among the routes analyzed is the new decline found on Shanghai – Genoa (-6%), where fares now slip below 5,000 dollars, precisely to 4,912 dollars. Losing the most ground (-13%), however, are freight rates for box shipments from the Chinese port of call to Rotterdam, which thus become cheaper again than those to the Mediterranean (4,724 dollars).
The decline seems generalized also in this round of evaluations, except for transatlantic routes, for example, from Rotterdam to New York and vice versa, unlike what was observed a week ago. In particular, the cost of sending a container from the Dutch port to New York gains 3% at 7,252 dollars, while on the reverse route, rates increased 4% to 1,305 dollars.
Otherwise, smaller or larger declines are found in rates for shipments on the Shanghai – Los Angeles (-9%, 2,295 dollars), Shanghai – New York (-5%, 6,887 dollars), Los Angeles – Shanghai (-4%, 1,226 dollars) and, finally, Rotterdam – Shanghai (-4%, 967 dollars) routes.
