Chinese young people like collecting Greek and Roman coins

March 23, 2021

Abstract : Young and very young coin collectors that love history and Italy or jewelers inspired by Bulgari are the new Chinese clients according to Artemide Aste, an auction housewith a twenty-year experience in numismatics based in the Republic of San Marino.

MILAN, March 17(Class Editori) -- Young and very young coin collectors that love history and Italy or jewelers inspired by Bulgari are the new Chinese clients according to Artemide Aste, an auction house with a twenty-year experience in numismatics based in the Republic of San Marino which collected these data after two years of relations with China.

From the beginning of 2019, new clients joined the platform where Roman, Greek, Medieval and Modern coins are regularly sold: a way to get closer to western culture.

Chinese clients are steadily growing and are now part of Artemide Aste's clientele, of which 60% is from the EU and 40% from the US. The company, as explained by its owners Bruno and Lorenzo Moretti, deals with low to medium level coins with a value ranging between 50 and 1,000 euros. However, the market of the People's Republic of China is in great turmoil also thanks to the acceleration of online auctions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, Artemide Aste is registered as a trademark and started developing "an activity that represents in all its aspects a major and strong cultural bridge, even if with commercial purposes".

The next initiatives also go in this direction. To bring Chinese people closer to the knowledge of Greek and Roman coins, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Beijing and the Republic of San Marino, Artemide is organizing a multimedia exhibition on numismatics, expected in the first half of the year.

As Bruno and Lorenzo Moretti explained, projects also include the publication of a monograph on Roman currency, with a focus on the Republican era, which could be followed by other publishing initiatives, all in Chinese language to make them easier to read, which is not an easy task considering the careful choice of characters to identify Roman consuls and triumvirimonetalis.

The aim is to approach the clientele of Mainland China, today composed precisely of young people and jewelers. The former ones range from 16 to 30 years old: they get information on WeChat, the messaging platform belonging to Tencent Holdings, and look for opinions and further details. In particular, among others, they love silver coins and those with the owl sacred to the goddess Athena or tetradrachms with Alexander the Great.

The second group of customers, capable of guaranteeing the highest volumes, is represented by jewelers; in fact, the purchase of antique coins is used to produce jewels inspired to Bulgari’s style for the local market.
