The coronavirus pandemic continues to put the brakes on the entrepreneurial spirit in the western German state of Hessen. After a drop in business registrations in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year, there was a slight recovery in the summer months, but the stricter lockdown in the country is likely to put a further damper on things, expects Robert Lippmann, managing director of the Association of Hessian Chambers of Industry and Commerce (HIHK). This will not make it any easier to start a business. "In many sectors, the risk increases due to unclear business prospects. But even now, necessity is the mother of invention," says Lippmann. Even if a decline is to be expected, the entrepreneurial courage of the Hessians should not be underestimated, he added.
For example, the development of high-growth start-ups also shows that the crisis also offers opportunities. They have also felt the effects of the pandemic in recent months, such as a drop in turnover, tighter liquidity, and delayed orders, Frank Müller, managing board member of the Business Angels FrankfurtRheinMain, told dpa. However, the number of start-ups applying for venture capital has not decreased because of this - on the contrary: there were many high-quality applications even in the months of the crisis, he said.
Some founders had also used the impact of the pandemic for their own business ideas: "We saw many start-ups from the eHealth and homeschooling sectors, among others," said Müller. Start-ups are also increasingly active in the field of artificial intelligence - for example, to support medical diagnosis and for troubleshooting in mechanical engineering.
