A major investor in the sanctions-hindered Nord Stream 2 pipeline said on Wednesday that the operating company, Nord Stream 2 AG, had said construction would resume this month.
"All I know is that the pipe-laying work is this December in German waters," Rainer Seele, head of the Austrian energy company OMV, told a live-streamed press conference.
Pipes are said to have been loaded for the construction work at the north-eastern German port of Sassnitz, Seele said. The pipeline is reported to be more than 90-per-cent complete.
Construction was suspended last year after the US imposed sanctions against the project, saying the pipeline would threaten the European Union's security by increasing dependence on Russia.
Russia has accused the US of using such sanctions as an economic weapon to unfairly secure expensive US gas exports to Europe.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline is to expand the capacity of the currently operating Nord Stream line under the Baltic Sea.
