The aerospace industry in southwestern Germany would like to see more support from politicians in order to make the importance of Baden-Württemberg as a location for the industry publicly visible. Too often, when the topic is mentioned only Bremen and Bavaria come to mind, Rolf-Jürgen Ahlers, Chairman of the Board of the Baden-Württemberg Aerospace Forum, told dpa.
However, in reality, 40 percent of those employed in the German aerospace industry work in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Up to 60 percent of the aerospace engineers trained in Germany studied at a university in the southwest. Research and development from Baden-Württemberg are in demand in areas such as satellites, weather observation, avoiding collisions with space debris and so-called precision farming, a method of targeted agriculture. "Every propulsion system that is launched in Europe is tested in Lampoldshausen," said Ahlers. "This is capital that we can build on."
Ahlers said that under the state’s Economic Affairs Minister, Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut of the center-right Christian Democrats (CDU), the situation had improved considerably compared with her predecessor Nils Schmid, a member of the center-left Social Democrats (SPD). He said that flagship projects such as the test fields for autonomous flying in Lahr and Mengen have been developed since she took office.
