German car manufacturer Volkswagen is planning to develop and produce an independent electronic vehicle model at its headquarters in Wolfsburg from about 2025, much earlier than originally scheduled.
The "E-Volume model" will be developed independently from Volkswagen's current family of electric cars, the ID. series.
The company had already indicated the plan on Monday evening after an extraordinary meeting of the supervisory board, during which chief executive Herbert Diess had demanded the reshuffling of key management positions and discussion of future investments.
An electronic model for Wolfsburg had originally been on the agenda for next autumn. However, the moving forward of the issue is considered a concession to employees' representatives, who had been demanding for some time that more electronic models be developed at VW's headquarters.
Current plans only foresaw the medium-term restructuring towards electromobility of the VW sites in Zwickau, Emden and Hanover.
The new electric car is to be based on the successor kit to the current MEB system and could achieve a production volume of at least 300,000 units per year, according to company sources.
At an online event with managers, Diess also went into more detail about considerations for a core role of software and IT in the group's management. "We believe that we also need to strengthen IT with a dedicated board department in the medium term," he said according to participants.
VW is currently expanding its internal "software-organization," with the main aim of increasing the share of self-programmed systems for cars and plants.
