MILAN, Feb. 5 (Class Editori) - To curb the negative impacts of Coronavirus on Milan Fashion Week, which will officially get to the heart on Wednesday, February 19 at 15 p.m. with Gucci show and then with Giorgio Armani show, the Fashion industry decided to launch the campaign “China, we are with you”, organized by the National Chamber of the Italian Fashion with the aim of creating a link between the two countries.
The initiative will be presented on Tuesday, February 18 on the occasion of the inauguration of the Fashion Hub, which will be hosted for the first time in Palazzo de La Permanente, and will provide for the organization of live streaming, special contents and interviews with fashion designers during the shows, in order to send a message of sympathy and positivity in a moment of great difficulty.
“Almost 80% of people usually coming from China, at least 1,000 people, will not be there”, Carlo Capasa, Charmain of CNMI (National Chamber of the Italian Fashion) has declared. On the catwalk, 56 runway shows, 96 presentations and 36 events will be organized, for a total amount of 188 events. Roberto Cavalli and Romeo Gigli will be there for a presentation. Milano Moncler and Philipp Plein, both with a co-ed collection, are walking down the catwalk again.
“Coronavirus caused a drop by 1.8% in the sales in the first quarter of 2020, but we hope to recover”, as Capasa has stated “in a time during which walls are built, we aim at building bridges”. In 2019, the fashion industry recorded a turnover of 67.3 billion, which actually amounted at 90.2 billion, taking the satellite activities into account.
In December, economic forecasts improved, but then the scenario dramatically changed, due to continuous conflicts in the Middle East and Libya, Brexit and the alarm on a global scale related to the Coronavirus epidemic. The economic impact of the latter can still not be evaluated, even if the measures undertaken by the Chinese Government are unprecedented.
“Each projection regarding the impact that the Coronavirus can have on our sector is untimely. I believe that evaluations based on data can come within some weeks, even if we hope that the situation can come back to normal”, the Chairman of CNMI has stressed.
A comparison of this situation with the SARS epidemic of 2003-2004 may show a minimum impact scenario. According to the fashion economic trends developed by CNMI: “the positive comparison with the SARS parameters is stating a reduction in the Italian fashion exports to China of not less than €100 million in the first quarter of 2020, which could be reaching €230 million whether the crisis will last the whole first semester”.
Therefore, the research has shown that: “a possible medium scenario would result in a turnover reduction of the fashion industry ranging between -1.5% and -2.5% compared with the first six months of 2019, which has been characterized by an export reduction between -0.5% and -1%”. The macroeconomic scenario is giving rise to more than one question, in particular for events characterized by a strong optimism, thanks to number and quality of the brands in programme.
The co-ed runway shows of this edition are: Agnona, which is introducing its first men’s collection, Antonio Marras, Atsushi Nakashima, Boss, Bottega veneta, Fila, Gcds, Frankie Morello, Missoni and Versace. Lastly, among the side events during the Women’s Milan Fashion Week, there is the collaboration of Emilio Pucci and Christelle Kocher by Koché as guest designer, for the f-w 2020/21collection.
Moreover, important anniversaries will be celebrated, such as N° 21 ten-year anniversary and Sportmax 50-year anniversary. In conclusion, CNMI will introduce the exhibition “Memos- about fashion in this Millennium”, a review edited by Maria Luisa Frisa and carried out in collaboration with the Poldi Pezzoli museum, with the support of MAECI- Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, ICE agency and the Municipality of Milan and with the involvement of Tendercapital.
The exhibition will be inaugurated on Thursday, February 20, and opened to the public from February 21 to May 4. “Inclusion and sustainability have always been our milestones, also during this Milan Women’s Fashion Week, which is marked by a particular attention to the environmental issues and the inclusion of different cultures” as Capasa has reiterated. “Our programme is full of sustainable, inspiring and international events, which will make our guests feel welcome in a comfortable and pioneering city such as Milan”, he has concluded.
