InfoQuest (January 16, 2019) -- The Department of Airports held the second public hearing to build understanding for the new airport in Nakhon Pathom Province on January 16. The hearing was presided over by Mr. Khajornkiet Rakpanichmanee, governor of Nakhon Pathom, with the participation of relevant government agencies, the private sector and the public who are interested in the project, according to Mr. Jaroon Meesomboon, deputy director general of the Department of Airports and chairman of the tender board of the company which is responsible for the feasibility analysis and consultation of the new airport.
The Department of Airports proposed the feasibility analysis for building a new airport in Nakhon Pathom mainly in order to alleviate the congestion of major airports and facilitate transportation for the public. The agency has studied the usage requirement of airports, and compared potential airport construction sites and picked out the suitable site in terms of economy, engineering and environment. It has also conducted survey and design and prepared preliminary construction drawings.
After preliminary studies, it was found that the suitable areas for airport construction were Bang Len County (Bang Rakam Town, Lam Phaya Town) and Nakhon Chai Si County (Bang Kaeo Fa Town, Bang Phra Town and Wat Lamut Town), about 5.3 kilometers away from the Bang Yai - Kanchanaburi intercity highway construction project and about an hour and 10 minutes' drive from Bangkok. According to the preliminary design, the project is planned to cover 3,500 square meters, the runway area is 45×2,500 meters, the area of the three terminals totals about 115,740 square meters, which enables them to receive 5,100 passengers per hour, and the parking garage and parking lot can accommodate about 4,200 cars.
In December 2019, the Department of Airports held a seminar to test the private sector's interest in Nakhon Pathom airport project. The seminar was well received and the private sector showed great interest in this project. After the second public hearing, the Department of Airports will gather all the information to report it to relevant departments and submit it to the cabinet for further approval of the project and allocation of investment budgets.
