JAKARTA, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology on Wednesday expressed willingness to deepen cooperation with China in vocational education and industry-academia collaboration, aiming to strengthen the country's downstreaming and industrialization efforts.
Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Stella Christie said at the 2025 China-Indonesia Education-Industry Collaboration Summit in Jakarta that aligning education with industry demand is key to developing Indonesia's human resources and improving industrial competitiveness.
Christie explained that Indonesia is now learning from China's successful experience in integrating vocational education with industry. Several partnerships between Indonesian and Chinese institutions have already begun, including initiatives to adopt and adapt curricula from China's Jiangsu-based polytechnics for use in Indonesian vocational institutions.
She said Indonesia is also encouraging its faculty members to gain hands-on experience in industry so that teaching can better reflect real industrial needs. She welcomed Chinese companies to support vocational institutions by providing or lending training equipment and facilities, allowing students to learn using the latest technologies applied in the workplace.
Christie also highlighted the "U+U+B" (University+University+Business) scheme, involving one Indonesian university, one Chinese partner university, and an enterprise. "Under this model, students study one year in Indonesia, one year in China, and one year as interns in an enterprise. Upon graduation, they are ready to enter the workforce directly," she said.
Ahmad Najib Burhani, director general of science and technology at the ministry, also underscored the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry. "Even the greatest innovations will have no impact if they remain in laboratories. We need an ecosystem that connects education and real industry needs," he said.
Burhani added that the ministry aims to use this summit as a catalyst for long-term collaboration in joint research, technology development, international internships, and the commercialization of research outcomes.
