MANAMA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Bahrain is ramping up its efforts to enhance tourism connections with China, leveraging expanding economic ties and recent diplomatic initiatives, Tourism Minister Fatima Al Sairafi said in a recent interview with Xinhua.
This initiative follows a significant state visit by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to China earlier this year, which Al Sairafi characterized as a pivotal moment in bilateral relations.
"Gulf Air's new flights to major Chinese cities such as Shanghai and Guangzhou will tap into China's extensive outbound tourism market," she noted.
Al Sairafi outlined several initiatives aimed at attracting Chinese tourists, including an upcoming roadshow in China and new agreements with travel partners in Shanghai and Guangzhou.
She emphasized that the roadshow will promote Bahrain as a preferred destination, showcasing the Kingdom's calendar of festivals and events. This includes high-profile international occasions such as the Bahrain Grand Prix, along with meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions, recreational festivals, and live concerts, all supported by a robust marketing campaign targeting Chinese markets.
"We are creating special packages and developing itineraries to welcome visitors from China," Al Sairafi stated, mentioning that these offerings would encompass hotel bookings and tailored sightseeing activities.
Bahrain is positioning itself as a regional transit hub, taking advantage of its strategic location and modern airport facilities. To encourage transit travelers to explore the country, e-visas and visa-on-arrival options are available for many nationalities.
"Bahrain has long served as a critical link between the East and the West," Al Sairafi remarked, adding that its historical significance along the Maritime Silk Road presents numerous opportunities to boost tourism and cultural cooperation with China through cultural heritage promotion, festivals, guided tours, culinary exchanges, and collaborative art projects.
China and Bahrain have forged a robust trade tie, with Chinese companies playing an instrumental role in Bahrain's infrastructure development. Huawei, which established its Middle East and Central Asia headquarters in Bahrain in 2009, has played a key role in the country's 5G rollout and advancement of its digital agenda.
Al Sairafi expressed optimism about the potential for growth in the number of Chinese tourists, citing improved connectivity and targeted marketing campaigns as essential drivers.
"By promoting mutual tourism, education, and cultural exchanges, Bahrain and China can deepen their bilateral relationship," she concluded, underscoring the importance of fostering stronger ties for years to come.
