A plant for the fermentation of biowaste has gone into operation in Bernburg, in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt. This makes it possible to generate sustainable energy, the company operating the plant, MVV Biogas GmbH, announced. In the plant, environmentally-friendly biogas is produced from everything that belongs in the organic waste garbage bins, for example leaves. Around 300 households could be supplied with heat and 2,200 households with electricity, said the mayor of Bernburg, Silvia Ristow. The city has about 33,000 inhabitants.
According to the state’s Environment Minister, Armin Willingmann, Saxony-Anhalt plays a leading role nationwide in the production and use of renewable energies. Biogas and biomethane are considered an alternative to natural gas. According to the company, 20 million euros have been invested in the project in Bernburg. Around 33,000 metric tons of biowaste from the city and surrounding region will be processed at the plant. The biogases produced during fermentation will generate about 21,000 megawatt hours of biomethane per year. Biomethane is a renewable energy.
