BEIJING, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. tech company Apple Inc. on Tuesday called on global supply chain to take new steps to address greenhouse gas emissions and to decarbonize across the board. A total of 55 Chinese suppliers, among over 200 global peers, have promised to produce Apple products using clean energy such as wind power and solar power, said Ge Yue, vice president and managing director of Apple Greater China.
Apple will track and audit its major suppliers' annual progress of carbon neutralization, on which it will be based to consider further cooperation.
Up to now, almost all of Apple suppliers headquartered in China have expanded use of renewable energy. Major manufacturing partners in China, including BOE Technology Group Co.,Ltd., Lens Technology Co.,Ltd., LingYi Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., Sunwoda Electronic Co.,Ltd., Luxshare Precision Industry Co., Ltd. and Shenzhen Yuto Packaging Technology Co.,Ltd., have committed to powering all Apple production with 100 percent renewable energy.
In fact, Apple has piloted many eco-friendly projects in China, said Ge, adding that Apple launched the China Clean Energy Fund in 2018 to help more Chinese supplier get access to clean energy. Through the fund, Apple and its suppliers have invested 465 megawatts of clean energy.
Besides, Apple also started its education program on protecting environment in China. Apple offers a suite of free e-learning resources and live trainings through its Clean Energy Program. More than 75 supplier representatives have participated in live trainings this year alone.
Apple also planned to expand learning modules for Chinese audience from October and render additional support to Chinese suppliers to get access to renewable energy.
