The semiconductor manufacturer X-Fab, which is based in Erfurt in the eastern German state of Thuringia and is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, is benefiting from the boom in electric mobility as well as medical technology. Like other chip manufacturers, the company is experiencing high demand, which even necessitated the allocation of extra capacity in the second quarter. X-Fab is in close contact with its customers to ensure supply chain stability, said CEO Gabriel Kittler.
X-Fab is not a mass producer of processors or memory chips, but specializes in circuits manufactured on behalf of customers primarily in the automotive, medical technology, and industrial manufacturing sectors. They act as interfaces, so to speak, between the analog and digital worlds. The range also includes sensors for a wide variety of applications. "We are among the top 12 in this field worldwide and the largest supplier with a European ownership," Kittler said.
Kittler cited assistance systems in cars as an example of how X-Fab's semiconductors are used, as well as tire pressure sensors and technical systems that enable visibility in fog.
The X-Fab Group, which has factories in Erfurt and Dresden in the eastern state of Saxony, as well as in France, where X-Fab is listed on the stock exchange, Malaysia, and the United States, says it employs more than 4,000 people. In Erfurt, where it has its roots, there are currently around 850 employees. Since 1992, about half a billion US dollars (currently about 510 million euros) have been invested in the Thuringian site. There are 450 employees in Dresden. There is also a smaller site in Itzehoe in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein
The company, which has been owned for many years by a Belgian investment company, has grown by taking over semiconductor factories. "Buying factories, not building them, is our motto," says the managing director of the Erfurt site. One special feature, he said, is the Thuringia site, where the factories have been integrated into an existing building complex.
