Chinese-Namibian joint ventures deliver key national road upgrades

October 10, 2026

Abstract : Chinese contractors China Railway Seventh Group and Zhongmei Engineering Group, along with local partner firms, have completed two major infrastructure projects, delivering critical dual carriageway and corridor upgrades in Namibia's Khomas and Erongo regions.

WINDHOEK, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese contractors China Railway Seventh Group and Zhongmei Engineering Group, along with local partner firms, have completed two major infrastructure projects, delivering critical dual carriageway and corridor upgrades in Namibia's Khomas and Erongo regions.

Namibia's Minister of Works and Transport Veikko Nekundi on Thursday officially commissioned one of the projects, the 231.6 million Namibian dollars (13.9 million U.S. dollars) final stretch of the Southern Link dual carriageway outside the capital, Windhoek.

"The completion of this project marks the realization of a strategic investment in connectivity, mobility, economic growth, and public safety. It demonstrates the government's continued commitment to developing modern transport infrastructure that supports national development and improves the quality of life of our people," he said.

Though measuring just 1.5 km, the newly opened dual carriageway plays a pivotal strategic role in unifying southern Windhoek's transport network by seamlessly integrating the Auaspoort Interchange, key bridges, and surrounding road networks.

Nekundi commended the contractor, China Railway Seventh Group-Onamagongwa Trading Enterprises Joint Venture, and all 15 small and medium-sized enterprises for delivering complex engineering works under challenging conditions.

"I also extend my sincere appreciation to the project teams, engineers, technicians, safety personnel, machine operators, and laborers for their dedication and hard work," he said.

The commissioning of the Southern Link follows the official opening on Oct. 2 of the 498.6 million Namibian dollars Karibib-Usakos trunk road upgrade.

The 31.2 km expansion, upgraded to a 2+1 carriageway, was delivered by main contractor Zhongmei Engineering Group, with local Namibian partner companies holding a 25 percent share of the contract work.

Namibia's road infrastructure connects all major domestic regions and links the port of Walvis Bay to neighboring landlocked African nations via strategic transnational corridors.
