Volkswagen must pay hundreds of millions of euros in damages to Dutch car owners caught up in the so-called emissions scandal, according to a ruling by an Amsterdam court on Wednesday.
The court upheld the class action lawsuit brought by the "Car Claim" association against the manufacturers of Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat. The claims relate to around 150,000 cars. Volkswagen plans to appeal the ruling, according to the Dutch news agency ANP.
The court awarded each owner of a new car fitted with the deceptive software the amount of 3,000 euros (3,550 dollars). For a used car, the compensation amount was set at 1,500 euros.
Anyone buying a car had a reasonable expectation of compliance with emissions limits, the court ruled. Failure to comply meant the car was worth less.
The carmaker, according to the ruling, had acted unlawfully by deliberately misleading both its customers and the regulatory authority.
