BEIJING, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Customs has officially adopted the English name of Chinese Baijiu to replace Chinese distilled spirits.
This change was proposed by the China Alcoholic Drinks Association on April 25, 2020 to the General Administration of Customs (GAC), and GAC agreed to make the change in the 2021-version Customs Import and Export Tariff of the People's Republic of China which took effect on January 1, 2021.
As the quintessence of China, Baijiu boasts a history of more than 2,000 years, and the consumption of Chinese Baijiu accounts about one third of the world's distilled spirits.
However, for many years, Chinese Baijiu is lack of an official and accurate name, and Chinese spirits, Chinese distilled spirits as well as Chinese liquor all refer to Chinese Baijiu, confusing overseas consumers.
The name change has played an important role in accurately depicting Chinese Baijiu as a national product, standardizing its export name and expanding its international influence.
In order to promote the internationalization of Chinese Baijiu, well-known Chinese Baijiu firms like Wuliangye have been making unremitting efforts.
For instance, Wuliangye made its debut as the designated wine at the series of cultural activities held at the banks of River Seine by the China Cultural Center in Paris in 2019 with the theme of "Seine Chinese sentiment", displaying the excellent traditional Chinese culture, deducing the Chinese Baijiu story, and serving as a bridge and bond for people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and France.

In recent years, Wuliangye has actively integrated into the building of the Belt and Road by participating in major global political, economic and cultural events like Olympic games and the World Economic Forum and promoting friendly exchanges around the globe with wine as the medium.

Wuliangye has also carried out brand culture promotion, trade and investment, scientific research cooperation, cultural exchanges and other activities in Belt and Road countries.
It initiated the establishment of the Belt and Road International Wine&Spirits Alliance to further enhance the exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese Baijiu and other wines in the world, promote Chinese Baijiu to "go global", and foster the common development of the world wine industry.
Currently, Wuliangye has set up distribution networks in over 60 Belt and Road countries.
As the Belt and Road construction goes deeper, the Chinese Baijiu industry with Wuliangye as a representative will further expand influence in the international market.
