Frankfurt (dpa) - Germany's central bank said on Monday that the country's economy is likely to have stagnated in the fourth quarter of 2019.
"German economic activity seems to have remained unchanged in the final quarter of 2019," the Bundesbank said in its monthly report, adding that while domestic consumption had boosted growth, a drop in exports had hampered it.
Analysts say Germany's economic prospects have been overshadowed by the protracted US-China trade war, the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and the shake-out under way in the German car industry as it battles to adjust to new environmental demands.
Germany only narrowly avoided recession in the third quarter after the economy posted a meagre 0.1-per-cent rise in the three months to the end of September.
