Sales of new cars rose slightly in the European Union in May after falling in each of the previous eight months, industry figures showed Tuesday.
On a year-on-year-basis, May sales rose by 0.1 per cent to just over 1.4 million cars, the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) said in its monthly bulletin.
"Demand in the region was mainly driven by the Central European countries, where registrations went up by 6.2 per last month," it said, while there were "mixed results" in the five main western European markets.
New car registrations were up by 9.1 per cent in Germany and 1.2 per cent in France, but fell by 7.3 per cent in Spain, 4.6 per cent in Britain and 1.2 per cent in Italy.
In May, EU market leader Volkswagen accounted for a 24.7-per-cent share of sales. French groups PSA and Renault followed, with respective market shares of 16.7 and 11.1 per cent.
