MILAN, May 28 (Class Editori) -- The new direct connection between Shenzhen and Fiumucino airport starts on Thursday 30 May. That one in the southern province of Guangdong is the first of the three new connections from the airport of Rome to destinations in mainland China. The next 12 June will indeed depart the Air China flight to Hangzhou, while on June 25 the Sichuan Airlines connection to Chengdu will be inaugurated.
The connection with Shenzhen is operated by Hainan Airlines, the fourth largest airline in China and first among private individuals. Passengers arriving from China will fly twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, on a Boeing 787.
The new destination, as well as the routes to Hangzhou and Chengdu, was presented two weeks ago in Shanghai, by the Minister for Tourism, Gian Marco Centinaio, on the occasion of the International Tourism Fair Itb China, in which Roma Capitale participated with a mission system that saw the presence of the councilor for economic development, tourism and work of Roma Capitale, Carlo Cafarotti; of the ADR managing director, Ugo De Carolis, and of the vice-chairman of the Convention Bureau Roma and Lazio Stefano Fiori.
Once the three flights are operational, there will be 12 direct Chinese destinations from the Leonardo da Vinci airport which will thus exceed Frankfurt by number, lacking behind London and Paris, which have are boosted by British Airways and Air France.
In recent years, the subsidiary of the holding company led by Giovanni Castellucci is having a leading role in welcoming travelers from China. Moreover, Fiumicino is the only airport in Europe with London and Paris to house all four major Chinese carriers (Air China, China Southern, Hainan and China Eastern), reaching 25 weekly flights.
In 2018 the six airlines operating between Rome and Greater China filled up the number of passengers transported with 760,000 people, up 60% compared to 2014. For 2019 a real boom in passengers is expected from and to China. Traffic is estimated to have increased by 20% compared to 2018 and the threshold of 900,000 passengers will be exceeded by the end of the year.
In recent months, the project of the business citadel adjacent to the airport has also attracted the interest of Chinese investors. A group of 13 companies visited the Business City, presented last May, which is served by two new hotels and aims to become a conference hub. The works will begin this year: the first 4 buildings in the district will be available between 2022 and 2023, while the remaining three will open in 2024.
