BYD's Dolphin Surf becomes Italy's best-selling fully electric car in July

August 26, 2026

Abstract : BYD's Dolphin Surf recorded 572 registrations in Italy in July, making it the country's best-selling fully electric car of the month, according to Motus-E, an Italian association advocating for electric mobility and the growth of Italy's EV sector.

ROME, Aug. 26 (Xinhua Silk Road) -- BYD's Dolphin Surf recorded 572 registrations in Italy in July, making it the country's best-selling fully electric car of the month, according to Motus-E, an Italian association advocating for electric mobility and the growth of Italy's EV sector.

Data from the Italian auto industry association UNRAE showed that BYD registered 33,973 passenger cars in Italy in the first seven months of 2026, up nearly 195 percent year-on-year. Its market share rose to 3.2 percent from 1.18 percent.

In July alone, the brand registered 4,466 passenger cars, up 127.05 percent from a year earlier.

At a BYD dealership in Rome, sales consultant Gianmaria Migliore said the company was seeing "very strong interest" from customers even in August, traditionally a quieter period for the auto industry.

"Customers are attracted to the brand for several reasons, including price, quality, technology and driving experience," said Migliore.

Migliore also noted that customers now arrive at their dealership much better informed. "Many have already researched the vehicles at home, watching reviews on YouTube and reading articles in newspapers and specialized automotive publications. When they come to the showroom, they are often looking mainly for confirmation and more detailed information."

According to a statement from BYD Europe, Italy "is one of the key markets" in BYD's European strategy, adding that Italian consumers particularly value compact, practical and affordable vehicles.

BYD Europe said Italian consumers are increasingly open to new energy vehicles while continuing to prioritize design, technology, safety and value for money. More than one in four plug-in hybrid vehicles sold in Italy is a BYD, the company added.

"We believe the transition to electrified mobility is a global transformation that benefits from openness, innovation and cooperation. While BYD was founded in China, we operate with a global and increasingly localized approach," BYD Europe said, adding that it is continuing to strengthen the local presence through investment in manufacturing, closer cooperation with local partners and suppliers, and the development of capabilities that better serve European customers.

"We see strong potential for deeper cooperation between Chinese and European automotive partners across technology, manufacturing, supply chains and sustainability," BYD Europe said.
