Marchesini exports the machinery of the Factory 4.0 to China

April 26, 2019

Abstract : The first ten years of Marchesini group in China began under the banner of 4.0 sustainability and international expansion with a focus on Russia, China and India.

MILAN, Apr 22 (Class Editori) -- The first ten years of Marchesini group in China began under the banner of 4.0 sustainability and international expansion with a focus on Russia, China and India. The Shanghai branch of Marchesini, a company specialized in packaging, with a 400 million turnover proposes itself as a technological champion in 4.0 production, combining the highest level of technology, reliability and efficiency for its high-speed syringe filling and packaging lines, installed just 10 years ago.

Marchesini Group is the world leading company in this important segment, the only one in the world able to internally design and build all the machines in the line and manage engineering and supervision. It recently announced that is going to focus on artificial intelligence applied to packaging lines launching new challenges based on sustainability and automation 4.0.

Over the past 10 years, the Marchesini group has consolidated its market presence in China under the guidance of Leonardo Ercolani, with the installation of nearly 500 machines in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic packaging sectors. In the Shanghai offices the team, which follows the training and updating plans at the head office in the heart of the Packaging Valley in Emilia Romagna, provides commercial and technical assistance programs to customers throughout Asia.

Marchesini Group is also operating in India and since 2016 it has strengthened its presence in Moscow with a dedicated branch for the market that revolves around Russia. The development programs were confirmed during the 2019 Open Factory, which took place in recent days at the Pianoro headquarters. The focusing point of the event was the prototyping department, with 1,000 square meters dedicated to digital production, in which 3D printers operating 24 hours a day and laser cutting systems were assembled. These technologies are supporting the development of machine parts which only a few months ago were produced externally and the prototyping of samples in very short times. The ultimate goal is to monitor machine wear, error handling and final production costs.

The overall growth of the Group - last year the consolidated turnover approached 400 million euros (a figure awaiting the approval of the consolidated financial statements), up 20% compared to 201, relies not only on the core business of machines for the pharma sector but also on packaging systems for cosmetic products. According to Cosmetica data, in 2018 the cosmetics sector in Italy grew by 2%, recording a global turnover of 11.2 billion, of which 4.8 billion generated by exports.

Marchesini is expanding in this market through a new dedicated business unit, whose offices will begin to take shape during the days of the Open Factory. The new resources employed in the Cosmetics Division are helping to increase the number of employees in the Group. During 2018, personnel grew by 16% compared to 2017, rising from 1,408 to 1,635 employees, without taking account of employees working at the foreign offices.

The Open Factory was also an opportunity to present the new Sustainability Report, the fourth voluntarily published, which this year boasts a preface written by the Rector of the University of Bologna Francesco Ubertini. The presentation was also an opportunity to show to stakeholders the concrete results obtained by Marchesini in 2018 in terms of environmental and social sustainability.

According to Maurizio Marchesini, founder and manager of the company together with the CEO Pietro Cassani, Open Factory 2019 proved to be very positive.

Customers from all over the world and stakeholders have seen first-hand the new developments that the fourth industrial revolution is giving to production processes, focusing on the latest developments in Industry 4.0. During the event was presented a unique innovation of its kind, a blister production line entirely designed and built to combine the workers of industrial manufacturing with the techniques of digitization and artificial intelligence algorithms. The final result is a machine that, for the first time in the history of the Marchesini Group, transforms itself from a semi-closed system to an open ecosystem, from which it will be possible to bring to the surface an enormous amount of data hitherto hidden in the environment of production.

All the elements are selected, interpreted and transformed into information that is then used, for example, to improve the quality of the production process, allowing errors to be corrected in advance or to identify the causes of production declines and to bring unscheduled downtime to zero, therefore anticipating routine maintenance operations.

These technologies, developed by Marchesini together with partner Sea Vision, will transform the plant into a smart factory: a totally interconnected environment in which machines capable of self-learning, people and information systems interact to create highly efficient innovative products, services and work environments. "AI is an advanced digital project, which will allow us to interact with the latest frontiers of Industry 4.0, also through the new purchases of Proteo Engineering and CMP Pharma. These issues cannot be avoided and despite their apparent abstraction, they have incredibly concrete impacts on the company," explained Cassani, presenting the new machinery of the Pianoro company.
