Florence proposed to Alibaba to become the Italian headquarters of AliExpress. Mayor Dario Nardella anticipated the possibility that other cities will compete, with the intent to immediately intercept the break "glocal" that the group founded by Jack Ma intends to give to the business-to-consumer platform that allows consumers from all over the world to buy directly from the distributors and producers in the People's Republic.

"I had a very positive and fruitful conversation with the number one of AliExpress" explained the mayor of the Tuscan capital to the local broadcaster Rtv38, "they will invest a lot all over Europe and I proposed Florence to bring their headquarters here, I know that the Chinese group is seriously considering that". Adding that: "an eventual settlement of the logistics company of Alibaba would be an extraordinary opportunity to create employment".

The appreciation of Nardella was directed to the small and medium-sized domestic enterprises of Wang Wingqiang, the Alibaba general manager. In a recent interview, the top manager talked about the possibility of making Italy a sales hub over the next 5-10 years. Wang proposes to create a local e-commerce market in Italy, but able to spread throughout the world. The platform aims to reach at least 100 thousand sellers in Italy.

Although Wang himself referred to the attention shown by Florence and Nardella, the company does not express its point of view on the mayor's statements. "We do not comment on indiscretions. We are regularly holding meetings and conversations with States and regions representatives all over the world. We currently do not have any announcements to make", commented AliExpress in response to a request for clarification of Class Xinhua Silk Road.

The European expansion of the group led by Daniel Zhang continues. In December, Belgium was the first country on the continent to join the Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), the global e-commerce platform launched in 2016 at the G20 hosted by China, when the winds of protectionism had already begun to blow, just evoked by Donald Trump, before his election at the White House. As part of the agreement, Cainiao, the Alibaba logistics firm, will lease an area of 220 thousand square meters in Liège airport, with an initial investment of 75 million euros.

Any developments could however be affected by the data protection policies adopted by the European Union with the strict regulation that came into force last year. According to the same Jack Ma, the Europeans would in fact be "too worried" about the protection of privacy. The reasoning of the Chinese tycoon is: unless you do not really understand the technology, an excessive supervision on the companies is likely to make everything more difficult. The positive example brought by Ma is Africa, a continent which, he quoted from the economic-financial weekly Caixin, "believes in technology".
