Indonesia launches major waste-to-energy project using Chinese technology

Abstract : Indonesia on Thursday broke ground on a major waste-to-energy project in Bogor, West Java province, using Chinese technology to tackle mounting waste while generating green energy.

JAKARTA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia on Thursday broke ground on a major waste-to-energy project in Bogor, West Java province, using Chinese technology to tackle mounting waste while generating green energy.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Bogor Raya 1 Waste-to-Energy project was held in Cibungbulang district, Bogor regency. The project is being developed through cooperation between Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara and the government, using technology from Chinese environmental company Zhejiang Weiming Environment Protection Co., Ltd.

With an investment of 2.8 trillion rupiah (about 157.8 million U.S. dollars), the facility will feature two waste combustion lines with a combined processing capacity of 547,500 tonnes per year. The project is expected to create about 1,200 jobs and reduce reliance on landfills.

Pandu Sjahrir, chief executive officer of Danantara Investment Management, said the project would generate enough green energy to supply more than 100,000 households in the Greater Bogor area.

"The project is targeted to process more than 500,000 tonnes of waste annually, equivalent to about 45 percent of the processed waste generated by Bogor city and Bogor regency," Pandu said.

He added that the project is expected to reduce landfill-related waste emissions by up to 80 percent and cut 640,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.
