TOKYO, Sept. 22 (Xinhua Silk Road) -- Maintaining and developing friendly relations with Chinese cities is important, said Yusuke Nakano, mayor of Hamamatsu, a city in central Japan.
Nakano made the remarks at a press conference following a symposium in Hamamatsu on the city's manufacturing heritage and multicultural coexistence.
Hamamatsu has long pursued friendship-city relations and exchanges with Chinese cities, including Shenyang in northeast China's Liaoning Province and Hangzhou in east China's Zhejiang Province. Shizuoka Prefecture, where Hamamatsu is located, has also promoted friendly exchanges with Zhejiang Province for more than four decades, according to Nakano.
Nakano said friendship-city relations provide opportunities for economic, cultural and educational exchanges, helping people from different backgrounds better understand each other and contributing to regional development.
He also called for continued people-to-people exchanges, saying such ties are important not only for relations between local communities but also for broader Japan-China relations.
