BEIJING, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese firms operating in Kenya have created over 50,000 local jobs with the proportion of local employees reaching 96 percent in 2018, according to a report unveiled by Kenya-China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA) recently.
Bilateral cooperation between China and Kenya has yielded fruitful results in fields such as major infrastructure projects, poverty alleviation, public health, cultural exchanges and special economic zone construction, facilitating industrialization in Kenya and creating plenty of jobs, noted the report.
Currently, around 400 Chinese-funded enterprises operate in Kenya which have strongly promoted local employment with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project undertaken by Chinese companies as a good example, stated an official of Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The report also noted that approximately 67,000 local employees received professional training in 2018 provided by Chinese firms in Kenya.
Chinese firms have been devoted to cultivating talents and creating jobs in Kenya, enhancing the exchanges and cooperation between the two countries under the Belt and Road Initiative, said Isaac Mbeche, Deputy Vice-Chancellor with University of Nairobi (UoN).
It is reported that the Confucius Institute in UoN jointly holds the Chinese-funded enterprise recruitment fair with KCETA every year, attracting large numbers of Kenyans to find job opportunities.
Li Xuhang, Charge'd Affaires of Chinese Embassy in Kenya, noted that China has become Kenya's largest trading partner, investment source and project contractor so far, and Chinese firms in Kenya have seen continuous development and increasingly improved localization level.
According to a World Bank report, Chinese firms in Kenya hired 360 local employees on average, far higher than the number of other foreign companies in the country which was 147. Chinese firms in Kenya have basically realized local recruitment and localized management. (Edited by Gu Shanshan)
