AMMAN, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan and Governor General of Australia Peter Cosgrove held talks on Wednesday, pledging to forge closer ties and enhance cooperation in various fields.
During their meeting in Amman, the two leaders discussed bilateral ties as well as the latest regional and international developments, the Royal Court of Jordan said in a statement.
They stressed the need to continue coordination and consultation on various issues of common interest with the aim of boosting bilateral ties and enhancing global peace and security.
The king said Jordan is keen to expand economic, security and defense partnership with Australia.
He said that, as both countries face joint threats and challenges, Cosgrove's visit provides an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation, exchange views, and work within a holistic approach to counter terrorism.
They also discussed the efforts to advance the peace process and relaunch serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis to achieve comprehensive peace in the region.
The talks also dealt with the burden shouldered by Jordan, which is home to 1.3 million Syrian refugees.
The king voiced appreciation of the support provided by Australia to Jordan through continuing its humanitarian and relief services to the refugees.
The two sides also highlighted the need to intensify efforts to achieve a political solution to the crises in the Middle East and to fight terrorism.
The Jordanian leader reiterated the need to preserve the historical and legal status in Jerusalem, and protect the Islamic and Christian holy sites in the city.
Also Wednesday, Jordanian Prime Minister Hani Mulki met with the Australian official to discuss means to boost the bilateral ties.
