China and Morocco to build Africa’s highest skyscraper -- Local media reported that BMCE Bank of Africa, China Railway Construction Corporation Limited (CRCC) and General Construction Company of Casablanca (TGCC) recently entered into a cooperation agreement to build Africa’s highest skyscraper in Rabat, capital of Morocco. Last May, the CRCC-TGCC consortium won the bid to build the Rabat Tower, in which CRCC and TGCC hold 60 percent and 40 percent of the stakes, respectively. The project is worth about 380 million U.S. dollars. Built on ecological design concepts, the 250-meter-high skyscraper will feature offices, apartments and hotels spread over 55 floors.

Chinese firm contracted to build massive hydropower plant in Angola -- Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos on August 4 officially inaugurated the construction of the Caculo Cabaca Hydropower Project in Dondo, Angola. Located at the North Kwanza province, the hydropower project will be constructed by China Gezhouba Group Co., Ltd (CGGC). Angola Caculo Cabaca Hydropower Project is currently the largest hydropower station to be constructed by a Chinese company in Africa. Upon completion, the project is expected to meet more than 50 percent of the country's electricity needs.

Construction of China-assisted airport project formally begins in Nepal -- Construction of Pokhara International Airport in Kaski district of central Nepal, being developed with the Chinese assistance, began formally on August 2, 16 months after the foundation station of the project was laid. The project is scheduled to be completed by July 10, 2021 as per the contract signed between the project office and China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd which had bagged the contract in May 2014.

Construction of world's second largest hydropower station begins -- Building work on what will be the world's second largest hydropower station started on August 3. The Baihetan project is on the Jinsha River, the upper section of the Yangtze, straddling Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. With a total installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, the project is expected to generate more than 60 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year, equal to about two-thirds of Beijing's electricity consumption in 2015.

More PPP projects implemented as China seeks infrastructure funding -- More public-private partnership (PPP) projects were implemented in the first half of the year as China sought private funding for infrastructure construction, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said on August 4. As of the end of June, 2,021 PPP projects had entered the implementation phase, with a total investment of 3.3 trillion yuan (about 447 billion U.S. dollars), according to the MOF website. That was up from 1,351 projects and 2.2 trillion yuan of investment as of the end of last year.

Nepal, China to develop cross-border power transmission lines -- Nepal has sent a draft of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to China for the joint development of cross-border transmission lines between the two countries. Former Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had asked China to help in developing 400 KV Cross-Border Transmission Lines Project at Rashuwagadi-Kerung (Geelong) border point. during a visit to China in March 2016.

China, Zambia reach deal for construction of more communication towers -- China and Zambia on August 4 signed a framework agreement for construction of communication towers (phase two) in the southern African country. The agreement involves 808 towers, 1,009 2G, 3G and 4G wireless stations, the setting up of a matched transmission network and user access terminals in unserved and under-served areas in order to improve communication services. China's Huawei Technologies has been engaged to construct the towers, with the project expected to take about three years to complete.

Ethiopia's Grand Renaissance Dam 60 pct completed -- The Ethiopian government disclosed that the construction of its Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has reached 60 percent completion rate. The construction of the dam, which will be Africa's largest dam upon completion with a total volume of 74,000 million cubic meters, was started in April 2011 with a cost of 80 billion Ethiopian birr (about 4.7 billion U.S. dollars).

Sri Lanka begins construction of Chinese funded OPD at national hospital -- Sri Lanka and China has inaugurated the official construction of a state-of-the-art Outdoor Patient Department (OPD) at the National Hospital in Colombo, which is the main state hospital in the island nation. The construction work of the OPD was launched on August 8 by Sri Lankan Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne and Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yi Xianliang. The nine-storied department will be fully funded by the Chinese government and is expected to be completed in 39 months.

Lao-Chinese joint venture building Laos' 1st oil refinery -- The construction of Laos' first ever oil refinery in the Saysettha Comprehensive Development Zone of capital Vientiane is expected to be completed in mid-next year. The refinery is expected to have an annual production capacity of 800,000 tons of oil. The refinery construction project began in 2014 as an investment of the Lao-China Dongyan Petrochemical Co., Ltd (LCPC), a joint venture between China's Yunnan Dongyan Industrial, which holds 75 percent of its shares, the Lao State Fuel Company 20 percent and the Lao-China Joint Investment 5 percent.
