BEIJING, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- The first unit of the Qujiang pumped-storage hydropower plant in Quzhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, was connected to the grid recently, marking the commercial operation of the plant.
With a designed annual output of 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours, the plant has a total installed capacity of 1.2 million kilowatts, with four reversible pump-turbine generator units of 300,000 kilowatts each. Once fully operational, it will provide 2.4 million kilowatts of regulation capacity for the Zhejiang grid, said a staff with the State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Supply Company.
Its 500-kV power transmission project, which sends the plant's electricity to the grid, runs 37.65 kilometers with 107 newly built towers and went into operation in February, about one month ahead of schedule. The Xiajin 500-kV substation, which receives power from the plant, was expanded in early July, adding one million kVA of transformation capacity.
Situated at the Jinhua-Quzhou power load center and connected to the Quzhou 500-kV backbone grid, the plant will help optimize the regional power mix, complement wind and photovoltaic power, and significantly enhance grid flexibility and new energy consumption, supporting Zhejiang's efforts to build the new electricity system.
