BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Staff members with the State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Supply Company recently started preparation work for the reopening of the Chinese Crested Tern hatching and breeding base at the Xiangshan Jiushan Island National Nature Reserve in Ningbo, a coastal city in east China’s Zhejiang Province.
The breeding base which had been closed throughout the winter is welcoming the Chinese Crested Tern, a critically endangered species, which returns to the warm coastal areas of Zhejiang every April and May.
With the help of the bird protection experts from Zhejiang Museum of Natural History and Xiangshan County Natural Resources and Planning Bureau, more than 200 young Chinese Crested Tern have successfully hatched at the breeding base, accounting for over 80 percent of the total hatched birds in all breeding bases around the world.
Since 2022, State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Supply Company has built zero-carbon observation stations and green electricity supply system at habitats of rare species.
This year, the local grid company has built a new zero-carbon microgrid at the observation point of the tern breeding ground, providing green electricity to support researchers in conducting all-round and multi-angle digital and real-time monitoring of terns, and offering a green electricity solution for biodiversity conservation.
