In order to counteract the shortage of skilled workers, the ministers of economics and labor in the eastern German states want to facilitate foreign employees' access to the labor market.
This was announced by the ministers after the first meeting of eastern German skilled workers in Leipzig, in the state of Saxony. Accozrding to an agreed paper, the ministers demand, among other things, an acceleration and simplification of the issuing of visas. In addition, they said, the federal government must prioritize the "digitalization of the immigration process."
The meeting with business leaders, trade unions, and chambers of commerce focused on exchanging ideas and measures to increase the attractiveness of eastern Germany. This requires "good integration and good wages," Saxony's Economics Minister Martin Dulig said. According to the federal government's representative for eastern Germany, Carsten Schneider, a regulated labor market integration also leads to greater acceptance of immigration among the population.
The Minister of Labor of Saxony-Anhalt, Petra Grimm-Benne, emphasized that a "joint shoulder-to-shoulder approach" is intended to "give eastern Germany the best possible profile in the competition for immigration." However, according to Carsten Schneider, the potential of domestic skilled workers must not be forgotten. This also includes young people without school or vocational qualifications and those looking to change careers.
