BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Live-Line Work Center of State Grid Hunan Ultra-High Voltage Transmission Company has successfully carried out an insulator replacement operation on a 500 kV compact transmission line in Yiyang, Central China’s Hunan Province.
This marks the first of such operation in China's electrical industry, according to the company sources.
On Oct. 17, at Tower 069 of a 500 kV compact transmission line, a team of seven aerial specialists fully equipped for high-altitude work, along with eight ground-based personnel, were getting prepared for the insulator replacement on the compact tower.
The swift completion of this live-line operation was enabled by newly-developed, specialized tools designed for live-line work on compact towers. These tools were operated by Xia Zengming, an engineer from the company, who has received the National Model Worker award.
The new tools address insufficient safety clearance for personnel, thereby reducing the risk of high-voltage electrical discharge during live-line operations on compact towers, according to Xia Zengming.
Unlike traditional transmission lines, compact lines have unique strengths, including a smaller land footprint and lower impact on surrounding buildings and vegetation.
Currently, China is home to more than 300 compact transmission lines, and many countries around the world are also working on the research and development of this technology.
