The high-tech industry in the eastern German state of Saxony is growing "solidly and continuously," according to the industry association Silicon Saxony. "The mood is very positive despite challenges," said CEO Dirk Röhrborn at the 17th "Silicon Saxony Day" at Dresden Airport on Wednesday. The planned investments would dynamize the entire industry, he said, adding that it was now up to the German and European economies to take advantage of the investment momentum in the semiconductor industry to position themselves with competitive products in international competition. Small and medium-sized suppliers in particular currently have their hands full.
Managing Director Frank Bösenberg was also optimistic. According to the association, around 76,100 people are currently employed in Saxony's microelectronics, information technology, and communications technology sector. And that's not all: The figures "do not yet include the announced increase in personnel from companies that are currently expanding their capacities and commitment in Saxony," explains Bösenberg. Compared to the previous year, the industry in Saxony is growing by 4.2 percent. The software industry alone is said to have grown by 7.6 percent compared to the previous year. This means that software is still the most dynamically growing industry in Saxony, he said.
"The location is growing in line with our expectations," Bösenberg said. In addition, the industry network assumes that "in 2030, around 100,000 employees in Silicon Saxony will be working on the latest developments in many demanding professions." However, Saxony would not be able to handle the quadrupling of the semiconductor industry's market share in Europe targeted by the EU on its own. Other semiconductor regions would have to be created in Germany and Europe.
Accordingly, Silicon Saxony also views very positively the fact that Germany is partly funding the plant that US chip manufacturer Intel is establishing in Saxony-Anhalt.
