German Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck is to continue talks in Washington focused on the US Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) with its huge investments in green technologies.
General trade policy and the geopolitical situation are also on Habeck's agenda before he returns to Berlin on Wednesday.
Along with French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire, Habeck is expected to lay out the European Union's position on the Inflation Reduction Act in a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Trade Representative Katherine Tai and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.
The two visiting ministers are aiming to secure exemptions for European exports from the new US regulations and more transparency about the allocation of subsidies - for which they wanted to propose a mechanism.
Commenting on the trip by Habeck and Le Maire, the French Ministry of Economy said: "The aim of the visit is to defend fair competition conditions between the US and the European Union."
The huge subsidies and tax discounts provided for in the IRA have caused concern in the EU as they are linked to US companies producing in the US and buying products made in the US.
