MILAN, Nov 29 (Class Editori) — New recognition for Italian technology in China: Comau, part of the Stellantis Group, has set a 100% automated production line for truck construction for one of China’s largest manufacturers, Foton Motor.
The Italian Group chaired by Alessandro Nasi, a cousin of John Elkann, has built a state-of-the-art automated welding solution for Beijing Foton Daimler Automotive Co., Ltd (BFDA), the joint venture between Daimler Trucks and Chinese truck manufacturer Foton Motor. In this way, Comau is helping to build the first heavy-duty vehicle for the Chinese market, BFDA’s Actros, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz global platform and uses Daimler’s most advanced technology.
The Comau production line, which is 100% automated, is designed to be fully flexible to enable the management of complex models and variable production. With an annual production capacity of 50,000 units, the Comau welding solution meets the customer’s current and future production needs.
As part of the project, Comau’s technical team was commissioned to use the “Daimler Integra 6” standard to create an automated, flexible, intelligent, and digital welding line for both the door area and dashboard structure.
Built to ensure cycle efficiency and streamline workflows, the solution features Comau's proprietary products, such as RH-Clean, an automatic roller cleaning device that can be used with different types of rollers and pre-bonding tools, and a visual quality control inspection system that uses QUISS camera detection and features a kick-in/kick-off process to ensure component compliance after bonding.
In addition, the project also leverages virtual testing technology to help test and optimize the new production line while reducing actual commissioning time, labor hours and potential post-commissioning risks. “During this fruitful collaboration, the Comau team played an important role in enhancing the competitiveness of our products. We were particularly impressed with their expertise in various aspects such as design, reliability, and cost,” William Sparenberg, Head of Mercedes Benz Truck Factory, stated.
“This important milestone paves the way for the localization of Daimler's first heavy-duty vehicle, a world leader in the automotive sector, not only because of its significant sales volume, but also because of its continuous pursuit of technological advances,” Gaetano Cantalupo, Head of Countries Cluster APAC at Comau, commented. “The success of this project is a recognition of Comau's capabilities, as well as the expansion of its customer base and into new areas of business”.
Series production of the high-end Actros truck is scheduled for the second quarter of 2023.
