The Port of Trieste to have a new logistics hub

October 19, 2022

Abstract : SACE guarantees the financing by UniCredit and BNL BNP Paribas for the acquisition of the former Servola ironworks area by I.CO.P., a construction company of the Province of Udine

MILAN, Oct 18 (Class Editori) — The new infrastructural logistic hub will be built in the Port of Trieste replacing the historical steelmaking plant in Servola, which was closed two years ago after 123 years of activity. This investment planned by I.CO.P., company founded in 1920 and based in Basiliano, Udine, and among the top European operators specialized in microtunnels, underground engineering, and infrastructural work, is supported by BNL BNP Paribas and Unicredit and SACE as a guarantor. In detail, the banks structured a 20-million-euro operation with SACE’s guarantee with the goal of I.CO.P. acquiring Finarvedi’s stocks, the concession company of the area in which the new infrastructure logistics hub will be built.

The new logistics hub fits within a larger framework which includes the redevelopment of industrial and port activities, environment rehabilitation and the reconversion of Servola, the area which has been disused for years, with the construction of the logistics platform. In addition to I.CO.P., the project includes the ministries of Economic Development, Environment and Infrastructure and Transport, the National Agency for Active Labor Policies, the Demanio Agency, the Port of Trieste, the Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the Municipality of Trieste, and Arvedi Group, which will sell the affected area it owns in exchanged for the adjacent area to build two new galvanizing and continuous painting lines, the protagonists of the first green guarantee with SACE.

In detail, the new logistics hub will have a new railway junction and extension of the port quay, a waste disposal plant, a rail yard, and a highway connection. SACE’s intervention falls within the scope of operations of strategic importance because it is the construction of a transportation and logistics infrastructure, thus considered to have a high impact on the Italian economy.

“The intervention being carried out by I.CO.P. S.p.A. Società Benefit in the Servola area constitutes a project that is both virtuous and ambitious. Virtuous because it allows for the solution of a relevant environmental issue by proposing not only the closure of a production site, but also and above all the realization of an infrastructure with a strong economic value in compliance with the highest ESG standards, and ambitious because it is part of an even bigger development plan of the Port of Trieste capable of producing significant spin-offs for the entire productive fabric of the Region for the upcoming decades,” Paolo Copetti, CFO at I.CO.P., stated. “The convergence of ministries, the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, the Municipality of Trieste, the Port Authority, private parties, and entities on this project underscores its importance and economic, social, and environmental utility. The active support of primary financial interlocutors such as SACE, BNL and UniCredit further testifies to its relevance and adds value. The intervention covered by the guarantee is a preliminary step to the realization of a first set of works for more than 50 million euros, to which are added the 27 million of the margining works contracted by Invitalia and additional works that will be subject to execution in the coming years, all in a logic of integration with the railway network and other port infrastructure”.

“Reconverting and redeveloping the disused area of the Port of Trieste is part of SACE’s ongoing commitment to support the country system as part of its strategically important operations for a sector considered to have a high impact,” Lorenza Chiampo, Head of Mid Corporate Friuli Venezia Giulia at SACE, stated. “We have been working alongside I.CO.P., one of the main operators in the area, for several years to support it in its development plans in Italy and abroad. It is important to act in synergy with BNL BNP Paribas and UniCredit with the aim of pooling skills and know-how for a common goal”.

“Our intervention in support of this redevelopment and revitalization operation is developed along two lines that are at the basis of Positive Banking at BNL BNP Paribas: economy and sustainability. We are increasingly committed, in individual territories, alongside companies —whether small, medium, or large-sized— that know how to combine business with attention to society, environment and people, to help them operate sustainably and consciously, generating a positive impact on the future,” Stefano Manfrone, BNL BNP Paribas Northeast Regional Manager, stated.

“The issue of value chains and the underlying logistics dynamics is a matter of absolute relevance for companies in the Northeast and, more generally, for the whole country," Luisella Altare, Northeast Regional Manager of UniCredit, commented. “Strengthening a logistics hub of primary importance such as the one in Trieste is therefore a forward-looking strategic choice, and UniCredit's support for the investment brought forward by I.CO.P. is a new, concrete sign of our attention to the development trajectories of this territory”.
