German Economy Minister Robert Habeck has warned of permanent damage to the country’s economy due to the energy price crisis. He spoke out in favor of extensive financial aid from the German government. Habeck told the German Press Agency (dpa): "Partly it's just a smoldering fire, partly the hut is already burning. In any case, the future viability of our economy is at risk, and there is a threat of permanent damage. We now have to muster all the financial strength we can to get the good substance of our economy through the crisis, secure jobs, and protect the investment and future viability of our economy."
Habeck said he was putting all his efforts into this as Economy Minister. "We are working flat out in the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs to set up the aid programs and are discussing the important financing issue in the government. We must not lose any time here."
Habeck had already announced his intention to expand government aid programs for companies because of the sharp rise in energy prices. However, the question of how to finance this aid remains open. Habeck had brought a special fund worth billions into play for this purpose. The country’s politicians have already approved a 100-billion-euro special fund for the German Armed Forces, which will entail taking on new debts.
