Mercedes-Benz announced its intention to halve its emissions of carbon dioxide per passenger car by the end of the decade during a conference on sustainability in Stuttgart on Monday.
"The company's goal is to at least halve CO2 emissions per passenger car over the entire life cycle by the end of this decade compared with 2020," CEO Ola Källenius said, adding that the transition to electric cars, improved battery technology and the use of recycled materials were important elements of the strategy.
At the meeting, Källenius also reiterated the manufacturer's focus on e-cars, adding that the company hoped to achieve a share of up to 50% of plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars by the middle of the decade. Mercedes then plans to go fully electric everywhere where market conditions permit" by the end of the decade.
More than 70% of the energy required for production is to be covered by renewable energy sources by 2030. To this end, solar and wind energy will also be expanded at the company's factories, Källenius said.
Mercedes-Benz also stressed its commitment to ensuring that human rights are respected in the supply chain. This included the extraction and production of raw materials such as cobalt and lithium, he added.
