MILAN, March 23 (Class Editori) — Now it is official: Stellantis will convert the plant in Termoli into its Italian gigafactory. The battery plant will be built by Automotive Cells Company (ACC), the joint venture between the company, France's TotalEnergies and Mercedes-Benz. An investment amounting to 2.5 billion euros is expected, while the government is ready to contribute with 370 million euros. The plant based in Molise will join the other gigafactories that ACC is building in France, Germany and the US.
ACC's partners have also committed to increase its industrial capacity to at least 120 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2030 and to expand the development and production of next-generation high-performance battery cells and modules. "We are grateful to everyone involved in this investment which will secure the future of the great Termoli community," Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, stated. "Transforming the existing plant to contribute to the creation of a more sustainable future positions ACC as a European leader in battery production and reaffirms, thanks to its collaboration with the Ministry of Economic Development, Italy's role in supporting the transformation of Stellantis into a technology company dedicated to sustainable mobility".
As part of its Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan, Stellantis announced plans to achieve global battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales of 5 million units in 2030, with BEVs reaching 100% of the passenger car sales mix in Europe and 50% of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the US. Stellantis also increased planned battery capacity from 140 GWh to approximately 400 GWh, supported by 5 gigafactories and additional supply contracts. (All rights reserved)
