German rail company creates infrastructure for electric cars

February 09, 2022

Abstract : The German state-owned rail company, Deutsche Bahn (DB), opened a new logistics centre in the north-western city of Bremen on Monday aimed at providing logistics for a new battery plant operated by Mercedes-Benz for its electric cars.

The German state-owned rail company, Deutsche Bahn (DB), opened a new logistics centre in the north-western city of Bremen on Monday aimed at providing logistics for a new battery plant operated by Mercedes-Benz for its electric cars.

Battery systems made in Mercedes-Benz's Hedelfingen factory in Stuttgart are to be delivered to the plant, which is just a few hundred metres from the DB logistics centre, for storage and sorting ahead of installation.

Mercedes-Benz makes the EQE electric range at its Bremen plant.

"We are proud that Mercedes-Benz is not only entrusting to us the delivery of new vehicles to all European countries, but also the supply of the new core of the E-car, the batteries, to its plants," DB executive for freight traffic Sigrid Nikutta said.

Jörg Burzer, executive board member for production at Mercedes-Benz, said the company was pleased to have in DB Cargo an experienced and reliable partner in moving towards environmentally sustainable logistics.

The automotive sector is one of DB's most important customers, making up around 25 percent of its freight traffic. Freight trains carry largely fully assembled new vehicles, but the manufacturers are shifting other supply chains to rail to achieve carbon-neutral production.

DB sees the storage and logistics procedures in the new centre in Bremen as an advertisement for other customers. Individual elements could easily be integrated into other logistics centres, and similar centres of the same kind could also be built, it said.
