BERLIN, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The number of China-based online retailers registered for sales tax in Germany has reached almost 48,500, a more than hundredfold increase in just four years, the Department of Finance of the Berlin Senate said on Tuesday.
In 2017, only 432 companies based in China were registered in Germany, according to the tax office in Berlin, which is responsible for registering foreign companies liable to pay taxes in the country.
The German tax office has reported a steady increase of up to 1,000 new applications from China per week. Monthly sales tax revenues have been "stable in the double-digit millions" since 2019.
In the first eleven months of this year, sales tax revenues generated by online retailers based in China exceeded 213 million euros (261 million U.S. dollars), according to the tax office.
"Just a few years ago, such an amount would not have been considered possible at all," commented Berlin's Finance Senator Matthias Kollatz in a statement. Enditem
