DAR ES SALAAM, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) on Friday officially sent off 22 train drivers to China for an 87-day advanced training program aimed at enhancing their operational proficiency in standard gauge railway (SGR) systems.
Speaking at the farewell ceremony held in the port city of Dar es Salaam, TRC Director General Machibya Shiwa emphasized the importance of discipline and professionalism throughout the training period.
He noted that the initiative forms part of the government's broader strategy to build local capacity in the railway sector.
"Discipline is key, and the continuation of such opportunities will depend on evaluations and reports from experts," Shiwa said.
According to Shiwa, the training is designed to equip participants with internationally recognized qualifications, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certification, which could enable them to pursue employment opportunities both within Tanzania and abroad.
"The goal is to ensure that our drivers attain ISO certification, which will allow them to work in different institutions globally, even after retirement," he said.
Shiwa also cautioned that any misconduct during the training would lead to immediate repatriation, underscoring the drivers' role as ambassadors of Tanzania.
"Eighty-seven days may seem long, but they could also be short. I will not hesitate to recall anyone who violates training guidelines, as you are carrying the flag of Tanzania," he added.
The training program is expected to contribute significantly to Tanzania's efforts to strengthen human resource capacity in railway operations, as the country continues to expand its SGR network, said Shiwa.
