InfoQuest (August 13, 2020) - Energy consumption in Thailand dropped 10.1 percent in the first half of 2020 due to the impacted industrial chain by COVID-19, reduced energy demand and stagnant domestic economic growth, said the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) Director-General Watanapong Kurowat.
Because of the economic lockdown by COVID-19, electricity consumption also decreased 3.9 percent, but household electricity consumption increased significantly due to "home quarantine" and "work from home", he added.
EPPO forecasted a 5.3 percent drop in energy consumption this year and the consumption of all kinds of energy is expected to drop.
The economic growth rate in 2020 will drop sharply by 9.0 percent-10.0 percent, possibly causing a 7.9 percent drop in energy consumption. The consumption of gasoline, diesel oil, aviation oil, LPG, fuel oil and electricitywill be down 6.3 percent, 4.0 percent, 43.5 percent, 10.9 percent, 10.0 percent, and 3.0 percent respectively in that period, Watanapong noted.
The EPPO will keep concerned about COVID-19 and other factors that may affect energy consumption, such as the growth rate, crude oil price in global market, and measures against COVID-19.
