According to a new report, the number of shared scooters worlwide rose by 164 percent to 66,000 this year. In Germany alone, the number of electric scooters has grown by 47 percent to nearly 4,200 vehicles, the Berlin start-up Unu announced on Tuesday.
Europe is leading the trend. 82 percent of the cities where electric scooters are available for hire are in Europe - led by Madrid, Paris and Barcelona. In Germany, the market is also growing. There are now offers in 17 cities in Germany, said Enrico Howe, head of the study. Germany thus remains one of the most important individual markets.
The Berlin-based e-scooter manufacturer, Unu, recently announced that it would also be entering the sharing market in the future. Unu's latest models of scooters, for example, are equipped with a sim card, which makes it possible to share vehicles with friends, colleagues or family members. The company now also wants to enter the sharing market with local partners. The first European partnerships are to start before the end of this year, said co-founder Pascal Blum, without mentioning names.
According to the report, although only 70 percent of scooters worldwide are electrically powered, this is due to the rapid development in India. But there are also strong signs that the market for electric scooters there is picking up significantly. Outside India, the share of electrically powered scooters has risen from 97 to 99 percent.
