InfoQuest, (April 1, 2019) -- Some areas are affected by the drought, according to Chayapol Thitisak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). So far, four provinces have declared to set up emergency assistance zones for people affected by drought. The assistance zones are located in two northeastern provinces and two eastern provinces, covering Mueang Suang and Mueang Suang sub-districts in Roi Et, Mueang Chan, Khukhan, Phrai Bueng and Si Rattana sub-districts in Si Sa Ket, Mueang Trat, Khao Saming and Bo Rai sub-districts in Trat, and Ko Sichang sub-district in Chon Buri. In total, 35 towns and 252 villages are covered.
DDPM joins hands with military units and related agencies to help people hit by the drought. They send water tankers to deliver water to alleviate water shortage. To meet household demand, they work with provincial governments to survey and calculate how much water is available in these areas, aiming to transport raw water to water supply systems and central tanks in villages.
In addition, people are advised to keep containers and conduct cleaning and maintenance work to ensure they are in good condition. They are also advised to choose water reuse equipment to store daily water as well as conserve water use. Farmers should monitor water resources, and cultivate short life-cycle crops instead of rice to prevent impact on agricultural output.
