Infoquest (March 28, 2019) -- Thailand Tourism Confidence Index in Q1/2019 stands at 98, a figure approaching the normal level and also tallying with prior forecast, according to Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). This figure indicates that Thailand's tourism has reached a plateau. Perhaps it is the result of this country's slowing growth due to global anemic recovery, ever-rising exchange rate since late 2018, a sustained low inflation rate and still serious dust pollution in some regions.
Feeble economic growth is the main concern of tourism players who fear of fiercer competition and a fall in purchasing power.
Some enterprises forecast a turn for the better in the quarter, as transport links are being improved and low-budget airlines expanded. In addition, TAT has also rolled out many innovative promotion activities. For 2019, the number of foreign tourists to Thailand is expected to reach about 40.64 million, up 6.17 percent over 2018, which will generate 2.20 trillion baht of revenue for Thailand, up 9.36 percent than 2018.
As to Q2/2019, Thailand is expected, if nothing unexpected happens, to receive 9.2 million foreign visits, up 4.62 percent compared to the same period in 2018. Specifically, 2.6 million are from ASEAN countries, up 4.31 percent, 4.03 million from East Asia countries, up 3.07 percent, and 1.15 million from European countries, up 3.60 percent.
TAT submitted to the government a proposal for joint efforts in developing public transport services for tourism destinations so as to reduce pollution, and for government support in advancing tourism promotion and environmental protection by local residents and enterprises. Meanwhile, it also hopedthe government can introduce preferential policies for tourism development, and help nationwide tourism destinations enhance theirexposure through promoting their activities and customs.
