German economics minister for the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Harry Glawe (CDU) wants to foster more small- and medium-sized companies (SMEs) and is thus urging Brussels to raise upper limits for subsidies on employees and revenues.
The EU is currently reviewing rules for what constitutes micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises. These rules determine how much support a company can receive regarding investments.
Currently, companies with fewer than 50 employees and at most 10 million Euro in revenue per year are considered to be micro or small businesses.
They can receive subsidies of up to 30 percent, while medium-sized businesses with up to 249 employees and a maximum turnover of 50 million Euro annually are entitled to subsidies of 20 percent.
The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is calling for the ceiling to be raised on upper limits in place since 2005 by one-fifth and for the introduction of an additional support category for companies with up to 500 employees.
