MILAN, Feb. 19 (Class Editori) - The EU launches a challenge to digital leadership with the desire to create a single data market with the aim of recovering ground compared to the United States and China. "Years ago, some platforms were successful elsewhere because in the US and China there was already an internal data market, while in Europe it was different, as often happens with national configurations", underlined the European Commissioner for the internal market, Thierry Breton, in the press conference to present the European plan on digital transformation, artificial intelligence and the data economy. "In the next 18 months in Europe, the amount of data generated will double to 80,000 billion. We need to be very careful to understand how this data are created and how to use them, "warned the commissioner.
The project outlined by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, intends to strengthen the competitiveness of Europe, recovering the lost ground in technology. By 2025, the value of the data economy will reach € 829 billion indeed, equivalent to around 5.8% of the Community's GDP. Brussels therefore intends to make available € 4 to 6 billion to invest in European common spaces and in a federation of infrastructures and cloud services.
"The challenge for industrial data begins and Europe will be the main battleground, because in Europe there is the largest industrial base in the world. Our collective message, after the analytical work done, is that we are ready to win this battle," added Breton.
Therefore, by the end of the year the Commission will present a digital services act, a revision of the rules on electronic identity security, measures to strengthen cybersecurity and protect critical infrastructures in the EU. The aim is to structure data governance and the framework for its use.
Accelerating investment in Gigabit connectivity in Europe is also part of the Community strategy, through a revision of the Broadband Cost Reduction Directive, an updated 5G and 6G action plan, a new radio spectrum policy program, the creation of 5G corridors for connected and automated mobility.
