BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Djibouti III hydropower plant in Ethiopia, constructed by China's Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC), went into full operation on Dec. 17.
This has been so far the largest hydropower project in Africa, feeding 90 percent of power demand in Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia.
The Djibouti III hydropower plant, operated by Ethiopia Electric Power Corporation, is equipped with 10 sets of 187 MW power generating unit. Dongfang Electric is the general contractor for its electromechanical devices and metallic structure.
Construction of the hydropower project was started in 2011. Since the first generating unit was put into operation in October 2015, the station has generated 4.3 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.
The Djibouti III hydropower plant is also the largest overseas project contracted by DEC so far. The company’s services and products now cover nearly 70 countries and regions, with the total installed capacity of overseas power plants in operation and under construction by the company exceeding 80 gigawatts.
