China-Malaysia partnership keeps AI goals on track, says official

September 09, 2026

Abstract : Malaysia's partnership with China, including its leading technology firms, continues to drive development in its artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with a strong push toward adoption and job creation, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on Tuesday.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's partnership with China, including its leading technology firms, continues to drive development in its artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with a strong push toward adoption and job creation, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said on Tuesday.

The development of the AI sector will prove crucial as Malaysia seeks greater sustainability and to face challenges posed by extreme weather, Fahmi said in his speech at the WAIC Connect Malaysia 2026.

Fahmi also welcomed Chinese tech giant Huawei's plan to nurture 30,000 Malaysian AI talents and develop 200 local AI partners over the next three years through knowledge transfer and cloud and AI collaborations.

"Such initiatives strengthen Malaysia's local AI capabilities and complement our strong foundation in infrastructure, semiconductors, manufacturing and digital services," he said.

Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing said China has always been open to international cooperation and continues to drive responsible and sustainable AI development.

"China is always committed to providing international public goods for AI governance ... China stands ready to work with all partners across the globe, who bear the same vision, to steer AI development toward an inclusive, universally beneficial and shared future. In particular, we should work together to elevate the voice and representation of developing countries, and champion the legitimate rights and interests of the Global South," he said.

The conference brings together government agencies, operators, industry customers, ecological partners and Chinese AI enterprises expanding overseas.
